Raphael Gamaliel Warnock, the 27-year-old senator for the state of Maryland, announced on Wednesday that he will not be running for reelection in 2020. Warnock is the second incumbent to announce their retirement this year; early last month, Representative John Delaney (D-MD) also announced that he would not be running for a fourth term.

Both Delaney and Warnock are highly respected members of their respective parties and have been instrumental in shaping the policies of their respective chambers. With so many seats up for grabs in 2020, it’s likely that their successors will be able to build on their work in very different ways.
